India's Fertilizer Majors Secure 536,000 MT of Ammonia Imports for 2026
India's major fertilizer producers have moved to secure large-scale ammonia supply for the 2026 season. A consortium coordinated by Indian Potash Limited — including IFFCO, Paradeep Phosphates, Coromandel International, Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals, Indorama India, The Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited (FACT), and the Ostwal Group — has arranged for 536,000 metric tonnes of bulk anhydrous ammonia to be delivered across India's eastern and western coastal ports between June and August 2026.
Of that volume, around 370,000 tonnes is allocated to east coast ports, with the remaining 166,000 tonnes destined for west coast facilities. The scale of the procurement reflects strong expected demand from the agricultural sector heading into the upcoming fertilizer production cycle, alongside continued caution around global feedstock volatility.
India remains one of the two largest ammonia importers in the world alongside the United States, underscoring how dependent domestic fertilizer production still is on seaborne supply, even as local capacity expands.
Green ammonia is also gaining policy momentum. In March 2026, green ammonia agreements were signed under India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, a step toward building more self-reliant, lower-carbon fertilizer supply chains. The initiative is projected to save the country close to $2.5 billion in foreign exchange over the next decade by reducing import dependence over time.
For processors and blenders operating along India's coast, this kind of coordinated, large-volume import activity is a strong signal to plan storage, handling, and distribution capacity well ahead of the June–August delivery window rather than reacting to it in real time.
